In pictures: WTC clean-up
In the eight months since the attack on the World Trade Center the site has been transformed from a burning crater of fallen metal to a flattened area, ready for redevelopment.
The day after the disaster rescuers were met with a nightmare landscape of twisted debris
It was too dangerous to even walk amongst the rubble
The scale of the destruction was unbelievable
One month on the cathedral like walls of the Twin Towers still stood
Even three months after the attack fires continued to burn
By five months the recovery teams had dug down to the garage level
At six months all but the foundations had been removed, leaving a gaping hole on the waterfront
By seven months virtually all traces of the buildings were gone
The clean-up operation has taken the workers right down to the dirt on which the complex once stood
