A remote-controlled robot submersible found the body of Dennis Dransfield, from Oldham in Greater Manchester, just before 1900 GMT on Thursday.

A police diving team brought his body to the surface at 2130 GMT.

Mr Dransfield was the fifth diver to die this year in the old slate quarry near Caernarfon.

The quarry is popular with diving enthusiasts

The quarry has claimed the lives of around 20 divers in the last 10 years and scores more have been rescued.

The unmanned mini-sub, or ROV, used to recover Mr Dransfield's body is equipped with a TV camera and is normally used in the oil industry in Scotland.

It was deployed in the operation because of the lake's extreme depth.

Earlier this week, members of Mr Dransfield's family visited the quarry, in the Nantlle Valley, as the search for his body continued.

Inquest due

Mr Dransfield failed to resurface after a trip on Sunday.

It is understood he was using special mixed gas equipment to dive to a depth of around 300 feet.

An inquest will be opened on Friday morning.
