Political profile

Liam Byrne won the Birmingham Hodge Hill seat for Labour in a tightly contested by-election in July 2004.

The computer company worker won with just 460 more votes than the Liberal Democrat candidate

The by-election was prompted by previous MP Terry Davis' promotion to general secretary of the Council of Europe.

Mr Byrne has previously worked for Andersen Consulting, Rothschild's investment bank and for the Labour Party in 1996/7.

He is also an associate fellow for public services and full employment at the Social Market Foundation.

He lives in Birmingham with his wife Sarah and three children Alex , John and Elizabeth.
