The day war was declared
BBC News Online looks back to the outbreak of World War II by asking a selection of famous and ordinary people to remember what they were doing on that historic day.
The Bradford-born politician Barbara Castle first became an MP in 1945. At the start of World War II the 28-year-old Barbara Betts, as she was then known, resolved to stay living in London and work as an air raid warden.
Dame Vera Lynn's sentimental songs We'll Meet Again and White Cliffs of Dover helped to boost morale during the darkest days of the war. Dame Vera explains why she remembers the day war was declared.
Tony Benn, elder statesman and member of parliament for the past 50 years was just 14 years old when World War II began. He clearly recalls listening to Prime Minister Chamberlain's broadcast.
