A 27-year-old man from County Armagh has been remanded in custody in connection with the biggest ever seizure of ecstasy in Northern Ireland

John David Wilson, 27, of Carnreagh in Craigavon, is charged with having class A and B drugs with intent to supply.

The charges followed the seizure of 300,000 ecstasy tablets with an estimated street value of £3m and a kilogram of cannabis at Belfast docks on Sunday.

The drugs were found in vacuum-packed bags in the cab of a lorry which Drugs Squad officers intercepted as it came off a ferry from Stranraer in Scotland.

A detective constable told the court the police would oppose any bail application because of the size of the drugs haul.

He said the accused told the police he had been acting under duress. But the detective added: "Police are satisfied he played a willing part."

The defendant was remanded in custody to appear in court on 17 February.
