Birmingham steps up culture bid
Birmingham Town Hall
The city is fourth favourite to win the title
Birmingham's bid to be named as the UK's candidate for the European Capital of Culture award is being stepped up.

The campaign aims to win support for the city's bid from politicians and the public.

Birmingham was shortlisted last October as one of six cities with a chance of winning the title, which comes into effect in 2008.

Bookmakers have Newcastle as the favourite at odds of seven to four, with Birmingham trailing in fourth place with odds of nine to two.

A 2002 poll showed Birmingham had the greatest backing among the public, with Cardiff close behind and Newcastle's bid in third.

It is estimated the winning city will benefit from the creation of 10,000 jobs and extra investment of about £100m.

The result is scheduled to be announced in the spring.
