Belper's North Mill saw a 9% increase in visitors.

It is thought much of that success was down to World Heritage Status being conferred on the Derwent Valley.

Consultants have now been brought in to revamp the centre.

It could see the introduction of a new video display area, better disabled access and more interactive displays for children.

Mary Smedley of the North Mill Trust, which runs the mill, said she hoped it would improve the site further and attract more visitors.

North Mill was one of a series of mills along the Derwent Valley which were given World Heritage Status by the UN in December 2001.

The status aims to record and preserve the industrial heritage of the area.
