Drivers 'unaware' of motorway laws
A busy motorway
Many drivers are "surprised" they have broken the law
Many motorists in Lancashire are unaware of the laws of motorway driving, according to police.

On Friday the force began handing out leaflets to drivers pulled over after committing more "minor" offences.

In many cases police say motorists are totally unaware they have broken laws governing the areas like changing lanes and using fog lights.

It is hoped the scheme will lead to more drivers being cautioned instead of prosecuted.

To drive safely on a motorway, you need a considerable amount of skill and road craft

The leaflets the force is handing out carry details of the offences drivers routinely commit on the motorway.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said many people are surprised when the offence they have committed is pointed out to them.

On the force's website motorways are described as "statistically safer than ordinary roads".

However, the site warns: "To drive safely on a motorway, you need a considerable amount of skill and road craft.

"They are unique roads, with their own set of rules. Some motorists find them confusing."
