Up to 200 trees and shrubs will be planted at the Westonbirt Arboretum near Tetbury to replace those destroyed by the October storms.

The largest arboretum in Europe, Westonbirt has more than 18,000 trees and shrubs of 3,600 different types.

The planting is expected to finish next spring.

Simon Toomer, arborist at the 600-acre arboretum, said the storms were a mixed blessing.

"It is always sad when you lose a particularly rare tree, but storms do provide us with an opportunity for planting and to get rid of older, weaker trees.

"This time of year the arboretum is very quiet.

"It's the perfect place to walk off the Christmas turkey," he added.
