It has been converted into a mobile screening unit and is testing people who come aboard for diabetes.

Over the next two years the team of researchers on board the bus is hoping to test 10,000 people.

The tests are said to be worthwhile, the team has already diagnosed 46 people with diabetes.

Dramatic rate

The purpose of the scheme is to identify people with 'type 2 diabetes', which can cause problems such as strokes, heart disease and problems with the feet, eyes and kidneys.

This form of the disease is increasing at a dramatic rate, and many people are developing diabetes undetected, meaning complications are developing before diagnosis.

The bus will ensure cases are diagnosed quickly

Sheila Tyers visited the bus on its maiden trip to Oadby library

She said: "I'm here today because my father's diabetic and also if you've got it then something can be done about it and that's the main reason really."

Julie Thomson, who is working aboard the bus, said: "People with high blood pressure, a family history of it, heart problems, have had a stroke or are overweight - anybody like that - is at risk and they are the type of people we are hoping to screen."
