The so-called "halfpipe" ramp at Mevagissey, near St Austell, was built five years ago.

But few of the village's youngsters use it because they claim it is too dangerous.

They skateboard through the streets instead, raising fears they could be hit by passing vehicles.

Better facilities

Martin Hopkinson, from Mevagissey On The Move, a charity which campaigns for better youth facilities, hopes Restormel Borough Council will support the plans.

"The ramp is too short and the ends are too steep for the younger kids," he said.

"It is also situated at the back of the playground and, with no lighting there, it limits its use to the summer."

The estimated cost of rebuilding the ramp is £6,000.

Biggest worry

Local residents have so far raised £4,000, with community policeman PC Nick Orton also doing a sponsored row.

Restormel councillors are now being asked to contribute £1,000 from their budget.

Village newsagent David Watson said: "I watch the skateboarders jumping up and down on their boards on the street.

"We have a one-way street here, but my biggest worry is they go against the traffic."

In addition to the new ramp, Mevagissey On The Move also has plans to provide a youth centre.
