Whisby Nature Park near Lincoln features habitats including marshland, grasslands and woods.

It was upgraded to a nature reserve by North Kesteven District Council for its commitment to preservation.

Its new status will allow the park to apply for certain grants.

The reserve is a haven for water birds such as kingfishers, grebes, ducks and herons.

'Remarkable' park

It has been popular with dog walkers and families since it was first developed 15 years ago.

To mark its new reserve status schoolchildren made a heron out of willow, which will be put on display at Whisby.

The park is a partnership between the district council, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust and Lincolnshire County Council.

Councillor Keith Wallington, chairman of the district council, said: "The quality and range of habitats which have developed within the Nature Park is truly remarkable."

The reserve covers an area of 152 hectares and features the educational Natural World Centre.
