Fight against illegal minicabs

Posters warning about the dangers of illegal minicabs
Spot checks have been carried out on 130 minicabs in London's West End as part of an operation aiming to reduce the number of illegal minicabs.

Officers checked the condition of vehicles and examined drivers' documents in the early hours of Friday.

Ten people were arrested and 23 cabs taken off the road for as they were unroadworthy or because the driver was wanted on warrants.

In October the Greater London Authority joined forces with police to warn people about the dangers they face if they use illegal minicabs.

Inspector Des Keers, leading the operation, said: "Unlicensed minicabs are a constant source of complaint and trouble in central London with drivers illegally touting for business outside the many pubs and clubs.

"Often these cars are actually unfit to be on the road and are dangerous for you to travel in."
