'Tatty' crab boats criticised
Cromer crab boat is towed ashore
Crab boats ruin the view, claims a councillor
Fishing boats which land Cromer's famous crabs have been criticised for their "tatty" appearance, as efforts to improve the shoreline continue.

Cromer town councillor Mike Bolger has claimed that efforts to redevelop the popular north Norfolk tourist spot are being hampered by views of the boats.

But the comments have incensed crab fisherman Richard Davies, whose family have been in the business for seven generations.

Richard Davies: Family has caught crabs for generations

For Mr Davies' business, time spent smartening up the boats would mean less time catching Cromer crabs.

Mr Bolger acknowledges that although the crab boats are "justfiably in that state because they're working boats, it may be that it's inappropriate for them to be there for the future".

Cromer is renowed for its crabs but the crab-catching business is not always the stuff of seaside picture postcards.

Mr Davies admitted visitors sometimes comment on the smell.

"Of course it smells, If it were a turkey farm it'd smell of turkey, wouldn't it," he said.
