Remand prisoner found hanged

A Prison Service investigation is now under way
A 20-year-old woman on remand in a Cheshire prison has died after being found hanging in her cell.

Nissa Anne Smith, from the Birmingham area, was discovered hanging from a bed at Styal Prison and Young Offenders Insitution in Wilmslow at 0755 BST on Saturday.

Prison staff and paramedics tried to revive her, but she was pronounced dead two hours later.

A spokesman for the Prison Service said Miss Smith had been on remand for breaching a community rehabilitation order.

"In addition to the coroner's inquest, the Prison Service will hold its own investigation conducted by a senior governor from another prison."

He said Miss Smith's next of kin have been informed, as have the police and the coroner.
