Traveller chaos at hospital
Caravans arriving on site
The travellers moved on to the site on Tuesday
Travellers' caravans which have arrived in Nottingham could cost the City Hospital thousands of pounds.

Up to 45 caravans gathered on land next to the hospital car park on Tuesday.

But managers could now be facing a huge bill for securing and clearing the site.

The travellers have insisted they have nowhere else to go.

Caravans on site
Travellers say there is nowhere else

Christine Goldstraw, director of operational services at City Hospital, warned the problem could have knock-on effects for patients.

She said: "Most of the cost comes from clearing up the refuse and even more unpalatable things left behind.

"The more we have to pay for clearing and extra security while this goes on is all money being taken away from patient care."

One traveller, who asked not to be named, asked for more understanding of their situation.

She said: "We apologise for all the problems to those wanting to use the car park.

"But the situation is that we have nowhere else to go.

Court order

"We are moved on from everywhere and we can't find even the smallest piece of waste ground to stay on."

Calls have been made for the city council to contribute to some of the costs.

About 30 of the caravans moved from the site during Tuesday afternoon.

A court order has been served and the remainder have 24 hours to leave.
