Jersey's La Moye Prison is to take on 21 new members of staff.
The Finance Committee has agreed to plans from Home Affairs to employ the additional staff.
Jersey's prison currently has about 180 inmates and, according to the Governor Steven Guy Gibbons, it is overcrowded, under-resourced and understaffed.
Two months ago he asked members on the committee in charge of States Finances to agree to plans to allow him to take on more staff.
Now those plans have been approved.
The extra staff are not expected to cost more because less money will be needed to pay prison officers overtime.
