Plans to cut £1.7m from a section which supports Jersey's farming industry could lead to 20 job losses, it has been claimed.
A States steering group is looking at proposals to cut the budget of the Agriculture and Fisheries Department.
Some savings will come from merging services provided by three States departments - Planning, Public Services and the Agriculture and Fisheries Department - but jobs could be lost.
Deputy Gerald Voisin, with political responsibility for public spending cuts, said if the proposals were accepted, every effort would be made to deal sympathetically with job losses.
People could take voluntary redundancy or early retirement, or get work elsewhere in the service.
