Guernsey's Mont Cuet tip is expected to reach capacity by 2013

At the moment, both islands are considering a range of waste options.

Last year, Guernsey's States rejected incinerator plans, deciding to look for alternative options, which included a possible joint incinerator in Jersey.

Now Jersey has decided to put plans for a facility out to tender in the spring, meaning Guernsey must finally decide whether to join in with its neighbour.

If a pan-island venture is agreed, it is anticipated an incinerator would be built in Jersey, with Guernsey shipping its waste to it.

But Guernsey's Environment Department believes politicians should reject the offer and wait and see what alternative solutions are suggested.

Meanwhile, there have been calls for Guernsey to find a new landfill site.

The Public Services Department has said a long-term solution to the island's waste problems may not be up and running for some time and finding a replacement for Mont Cuet is urgent.

It is estimated the landfill site will reach maximum capacity by 2013.
