The States is on target to make Guernsey's waste tip last another seven years, according to officials.
A former States politician had claimed the amount of rubbish would reach ground level in two years time.
Peter Bougourd believes that finding a long-term solution to Guernsey's waste disposal is a higher priority than improving sewage treatment.
But the Environment and the Public Services department said the tip is still expected to last until 2013.
It said a solution would have to be found by then and the subject was due to be debated by the States again in the next two months.
