Cash needed to investigate waste

A public meeting is to be held in St Peter Port on 11 May
At least £1m is needed to investigate potential solutions to Guernsey's waste problems, according to the States Environment Department.

The amount was revealed by the department's minister as part of a report into the future waste strategy.

The department wants States approval to start a number of recycling initiatives in the next few months.

Deputy Bernard Flouquet says it is imperative a major decision is made within 18 months.

He said: "I can't tell you what the end cost is going to be. I hope it's going to be a lot less that the costs of £18m we were facing a year ago.

"I think everybody hopes that's what's going to happen, but quite honestly this is something which will only come out in the fullness of time."

A special public meeting is to be held at the Beau Sejour centre in St Peter Port on 11 May at 1930 BST to discuss the future of solid waste disposal.
