The by-products of burning clinical waste from Guernsey's hospitals will soon be exported to the UK.
A new incinerator was installed to destroy the waste in August 2002, but the ash it produces cannot be disposed of safely on the island.
Until now it has been safely stored at the King Edward the Seventh Hospital, but around 30 tonnes will shortly be packed ready for shipment.
Smaller consignments will be sent to the UK approximately every six months.
