The vehicle, owned by one of the all-night discos, collided with Mr Hollloway as he walked along the main road from San Antonio in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The teenager, who would have celebrated his 18th birthday later this month, was on holiday with friends.

According to Helen Watson, the British vice-consul in Ibiza, in recent years more than 30 young people have been killed on the stretch of road which is popular with clubbers.

"The road which links San Antonio with the island's capital is very busy and was completely unlit," she said.

"Disco customers had to cross it to catch the bus back to San Antonio and accidents were caused by people looking the wrong way before stepping into the road."

Killed or injured

Back in July 2000, 19-year-old Rebecca Watkins, from Briton Ferry near Neath, was killed on the second day of her holiday when she walked out of packed nightclub and began crossing the unlit road.

Ms Watkins had been inside the Amnesia nightclub, outside which the owners later installed street lighting.

The lights, usually used on motorways stretched for more than half-a-mile and, according to Ms Watson, conditions on the road have improved as a result.

"We are grateful to the disco management for taking on this task," she said.

The road used to be a dusty, pot-holed stretch of sun-scorched tarmac until two years ago when it was upgraded to a £1.5m trunk road.

More than 20,000 vehicles are estimated to use it each day at the height of summer.

With a 75mph speed limit, it runs past the Amnesia and Privilege nightclubs which hold 24,000 clubbers between them.

After lights were fitted there was a reduction in the number of people killed or injured on the road.

However, three weeks ago a 25-year-old British man was killed on the island.

David MacCall was at the wheel of his car when it collided with another vehicle and a taxi at the same spot.

He was killed along with a 26-year-old Dutchman, a Canadian tourist and the taxi driver.
