Homes evacuated as floods continue
South Ersk and River Street, Brechin
The sandbags failed to stem the tide
People living in Brechin in eastern Scotland have been evacuated from their homes after the South Esk river burst its banks.

Sandbags used in Brechin to stem the overflow of the South Esk could not prevent the town's River Street becoming deluged.

Earlier more than 40 elderly residents of a nursing home were forced to spend the night in temporary accommodation because of flooding.

They were evacuated from the Drumdarroch Nursing Home at Insch, Aberdeenshire, after a local burn off the river Urie burst its banks leaving several feet of water surrounding the building.

Most were taken to a hotel in a fleet of ambulances but four went to nearby hospitals.

Floods in Brechin
Homes received some unwelcome visitors

Heavy rain and strong winds have swept parts of the country causing disruption.

A number of roads in the north east were closed when the region was battered by 48 hours of heavy rain and strong winds.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) issued three flood warnings in north-eastern areas of Tayside.

The floods came just days after heavy rain and high tides caused devastation in Moray and Elgin.

The flood warnings are:

  • the river South Esk from Cortachy to Bridge of Dun including Brechin;

  • river Isla from Bridge of Ruthven to the river Tay;

  • river Ericht from Blairgowrie to the river Isla.

Over the weekend about 200 people were forced from their homes into temporary accommodation.
