Archer trial
Jeffrey Archer: A Life of Lies
19 July 2001 at 2030 BST

On the day the Archer perjury trial has finished, Panorama comes right up to date with the latest twists and turns of Lord Archer's exciting life story.

Reporter Michael Crick is Lord Archer's foremost chronicler. He has written an unauthorised biography of the politician and novelist, now in its 3rd edition.

Some characters in the tale speak for the first time on television, and Archer's former friend and aide Michael Stacpoole speaks at length on his role in Archer's life.

Archer won his 1987 libel case against the Daily Star by convincing the jury, and the judge, that he was a devoted and faithful husband, but Panorama builds up a very different picture.

Michael Stacpoole says that one year Archer bought the same sets of jewellery for both his wife Mary and lover Andrina Colquhoun.

Stacpoole also reveals that the wad of £50 notes that Archer gave him to give to prostitute Monica Coghlan was much more than the £2,000 quoted at the time.
