Images show binge drink dangers
Police officers on Tyneside used CCTV footage to show pub-goers the dangers of binge drinking.

A video showing drunken revellers, including a woman laying in the gutter and a man assaulting takeaway staff, was shown in South Shields.

A police CCTV van was parked at the junction of King Street and Mile End Road on Friday and Saturday night, so passers-by could see the images.

It was part of Northumbria Police's The Party's Over campaign.

Ch Insp Dave Metcalfe, of South Tyneside Area Command, said: "As well as enforcing the law by arresting people who commit offences we also want to help people understand why certain behaviour is unacceptable.

"The feedback we've had from people who saw this footage was that it really sobered them up and made them think about their behaviour."

Police in South Tyneside made 32 arrests as part of the campaign for the week ending 3 July; 21 for drunkenness, seven for assaults and four for disorder.
