A simple device that prevents fireworks being pushed through letterboxes is being handed out to elderly people in South Tyneside.
The council's community safety team are supplying and fitting the latches, which can be flipped over a letterbox.
Joanne Bell, lead member for community safety, said that though such incidents were few, they hoped this would make people feel safer in their own homes.
The free service is offered to people aged over 60 who live alone.
Ms Bell said: "We brought in the latches last year and there was a huge demand for them.
"The feedback from residents who had them fitted told us they felt much safer in their homes, so we had no hesitation in offering them again this year."
