Birdman contestants fly from pier
Green Giant Flying Machine
Prizes were awarded for big jumps and wacky costumes
Daredevils have been hurling themselves off Eastbourne Pier for the annual birdman competition.

The 11th annual event saw intrepid aviators in wacky costumes jump off the pier on Saturday to compete in two categories - Wright and Wacky.

The Wright category is in two sections - for the furthest distance flown and for the most innovative design.

The Wacky category rewards the jumper who most impresses judges with their costume, style and composure.

Paul Johnson and Nick Purple, who work at the Crown and Anchor pub on the seafront, constructed a Green Giant Flying Person machine and said the experience had been "challenging and enjoyable".

£2,000 in prize money was up for grabs in the contest, watched by thousands of people.

Money raised from the event is being given to the RNLI and Eastbourne lifeboats.
