The city council now controls Arnos Vale Cemetery

The service was held at midday on Monday at the tomb of Rajah Ram Mohan Roy, a grade II star monument.

A statue stands on College Green, given by India to Bristol to remember the life of the Rajah, who died in the city on 27 September, 1833.

Bristol's Lord Mayor attended the ceremony, as well as a representative from the Indian High commission.

The city council took control of the cemetery in August 2003, and a trust fund was set up to help with much-needed repair work.

A £1m appeal was subsequently launched earlier in September to help fund restoration work.

The 45-acre graveyard includes several Victorian chapels and important monuments.

Flowers and wreaths were laid at Monday's service, and prayers (Hindu, Brahmo, Unitarian) offered.
