Last week Larry Shaw, who is thought to have been homeless, was found dead on Beckett Street.

His death realised the fears of charity workers at the Churches Housing Coalition Group which has been campaigning for a night shelter for months.

Now a refuge is to open at the Glad Tidings Hall on Boyer Street from Saturday.

Volunteer appeal

The venture in collaboration with Derbyshire Housing Aid, has been made possible with money from the city council and other charities.

There will be 10 beds on offer along with soup and hot drinks.

The charities are asking for volunteers to come forward to stay at the hall overnight and help out.

Louise Brown from Derbyshire Housing Aid: "This will be somewhere that is warm and dry for people to come along and get a cup of tea, a cup of coffee or some soup and be able to sleep."

The shelter is backed with £30,000 of funding.

An extra £10,000 will allow it to remain open until March.
