GSCE results
The number of entries receiving top grades has increased
The table below gives the provisional GCSE results for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

There was an increase of 21,656 in the number of papers sat this year as opposed to last.

Exam Results '99
The results show increases in entries for design and technology, English literature, information technology, physical education and religious studies.

The numbers of entries in physics, chemistry and biology have also gone up.

The biggest fall in entries were in art, business studies, geography and home economics.

The table below shows a breakdown of grades and entries for each subject.

After the name of each subject is the number of entries. The next line shows the proportions awarded pass grades A* to G, and grade U (fail). The figures in brackets are the equivalent provisional statistics from last year.
