Computing is soaring in popularity
Overall, the pattern of entries across all A level subjects remained broadly similar this year to that in 1998.

But there were increases in the numbers taking business studies, computing and general studies. Computing rose in popularity by 17%.

There were significant decreases in the numbers taking English, the sciences, French, geography and history.

The table below shows the percentage of candidates getting the various grades in each A level subject. The rows in grey are the 1998 figures, for comparison.

A levels are graded from A (the best) down to E, with N denoting a 'near miss' - not good enough to pass, but only by a small margin. A grade U (unclassified) is a clear failure.
