1. Navigation icons
The Jonesville title bar at the top of the display window contains navigation icons to help you move around:
- LEFT ARROW:
takes you back one step
- HOUSE ICON:
restarts Jonesville
- QUESTION MARK:
opens this Help section
- LETTER 'S':
turns English subtitles on or off. 'S' is highlighted green when switched on
(NB subtitles not applicable to 'Look' mode)
2. Using the 'Look' mode
'Look' mode lets you learn and hear new words by exploring clickable objects within each work environment.
- Click on one of the town's buildings to select an environment
- Click on the objects in the room to see the word and hear the pronunciation
- Click on 'Next' and 'Previous' to move from room to room
- To change environment, click the LEFT ARROW button in the title bar
3. Using 'Listen' mode
'Listen' mode lets you watch, listen and test yourself on the characters' dialogues in different work environments.
- Click on one of the town's buildings to select an environment
- Select one of the dialogues
- Select one of the 'Listen Mode Options':
- Watch a scene: Listen to the dialogue between two Welsh speakers
- Test your Welsh: Test your understanding of the dialogue
- Select another scene: Choose another dialogue
4. Using 'Talk' mode
You need a microphone attached to a compatible soundcard in your PC to use 'Talk' mode.
'Talk' mode lets you interact with the spoken dialogues in 'Listen' mode, by allowing you to record your own voice to your PC and listen back to it as part of the dialogue.
- Click on one of the town's buildings to select an environment
- Select one of the dialogues
- Click one of the 'Talk Mode Options':
- Watch the scene in full with your voice: Listen to your voice as part of a dialogue with a character. If you haven't recorded your voice before selecting this option, the dialogue will play back without your voice.
- Interact with the conversation and record your voice: Record your voice to your PC, then interact with one of the characters in the dialogue by following the instructions in the record setting display box. Listen to your voice by selecting 'Watch the scene in full with your voice'.
- Select another scene: Choose another dialogue
5. Frequently Asked Questions
- Q I can't hear any sound when I click on objects in Jonesville
A You need a compatible sound card in your PC, with speakers attached, switched on, and the volume turned up.
- Q It takes ages to load when I enter a building in 'Look' or 'Listen' mode
A The sound playback quality might be too high for your internet connection speed. Choose the 'low' quality audio option instead.
- Q Why doesn't anything appear inside the Jonesville display window?
A You may not have the latest Flash player installed on your PC. Download the latest player from www.macromedia.com
- Q Why can't I open the 'Talk' mode installation file on my PC?
A You might not have the right software to open the '.zip' file. Download a free trial version of 'Win Zip' from www.winzip.com
- Q Why can't I record my voice in 'Talk' mode?
A There are several possible solutions:
- You need a microphone attached to a compatible soundcard in your PC. Not all PC soundcards work with the 'Talk' mode. The following are known soundcards with problems:
- eMachine
- CrystalWave built in sound on HP Vectra and on Dell Optiplex,Windows NT
- AMD Athlon 1,4 with a 'sound on board' mainboard (VIA AC'97 Audio Controller),Win98
- AurealVortex card on Dell, SIIG card, Dell P3/450, Undetermined card, Gateway P233 Windows 98
- ESS 1868 Windows 98 only
- ESS Maestro2E
- Check the microphone settings in 'Setup'
- Select Input Device: Check which socket your microphone is plugged into on your soundcard
- Input Volume: Make sure the input volume is set high enough so you can hear it play back
- Save Location: Make sure the save location is the same as the folder where you've saved the application
- Q In 'Talk' mode I can record and hear my voice when I do a test, so why doesn't it play back within the dialogue?
A Check the microphone settings in 'Setup'. See above
