The past
Now that you can talk about your morning routine in the present tense here's how to use the past tense. | Dw i'n codi | Codais i | I got up | | Dw i'n molchi | Molchais i | I washed myself | | Dw i'n gwisgo | Gwisgais i | I got dressed | | Dw i'n bwyta | Bwytais i | I ate |
Notice that what we're doing is adding a personal ending to something called the stem of the verb. How do we find the stem?
If the verb ends with a vowel we drop the vowel
(In Welsh the vowels are a e i o u w y)
gwisgo gwisgais i
If the verb ends with -io we drop the o.
ffonio (to telephone) ffoniais i
If the verb ends in -ed / -eg we drop the end.
cerdded (to walk) cerddais i rhedeg (to run) rhedais i also - gweld (to see) gwelais The object of a conjugated verb mutates. In other words the word directly after a verb in the past mutates:| Bwytais i frecwast. | (brecwast) | I ate breakfast. | | Gwelais i gi. | (ci) | I saw a dog. | | Darllenais i lyfr. | (llyfr) | I read a book. |
