Ten tips for interview success

Do your preparation

Find out as much as possible about the company and the job beforehand. Your local library may have material on the company itself. Ask friends and family. Do they publish an annual report? The Job Centre and Careers Centre may have information that could be useful to you.

Try to discover what sort of interview you’re likely to have. A one-to-one friendly chat? Formal interview panel? Written tests?

Work out answers to obvious questions (‘why do you want this job?’) the night before.

Think up some questions you would like to ask. Choose ones which will make you sound genuinely interested in the job like ‘could you tell me more about the training?’ or 'Could I try out work in other departments?'

Get organised

Appear smartly dressed and well groomed.

Check and double-check the place, date and time.

Make sure you know how to get there and leave home in plenty of time. A 'dummy run' is never a waste of time.

Know where to go and who to ask for when you get there. Take any appointment card or letter with you.

Take along anything which might be of interest to the interviewer - exam certificates, record of achievement, work experience report etc.

During the interview

Answer all questions as fully as you can. This is your chance to prove that you are the one for the job.
