Choosing HE subjects - checklist

Will I like this subject?

You’ll be spending an awful lot of time doing it over the next few years.Do you really know what’s involved? Is it going to hold your interest?

Is this subject popular?

Generally speaking, the more popular the subject, the higher the grades you’ll need.

Subjects which lots of people want to do, like psychology, physiotherapy, medicine and English, are harder to get into.

However, trends vary. Your careers adviser can give you information on these trends.

Do I want to take more than one subject?

  • single subject course?
  • joint/combined subject course?
  • interdisciplinary course?

Do I need to take this subject to get the job I want?

If you’ve got a definite career in mind, check in A-Z of jobs to see if you need a specific degree or HND.

Am I sure I want to do this job?

If you’re looking at a vocational course like teaching or medicine, check in A-Z of jobs to make sure you know what the job involves.

Will I get a job with a degree in this subject?
