For many years Jean didn't do any gardening because she never had much success. Her father had none either, probably because he was born in the year of the chicken - the two don't go together. But now she's trying to grow cactuses, which Chinese people aren't supposed to like because of the spikes - you're supoposed to have smooth, luscious plants.
