Moving on to letters and fans. What was that like?
Lulu: Most of it was fine. We used to get quite a lot of fan mail and we used to send photos. We used to get a few letters from people.

And what did they involve?

Lulu: People just writing slightly strange things, as you can imagine. We used to get quite a lot of people writing from prison. But that was fine. We had a couple of people who said something horrible is going to happen to you and we had a couple of guys following us around. It certainly didn't have the kind of affect it does now. I don't think the word stalker had been invented then. Now, I think people would take that sort of thing very seriously. We would report to BBC security if someone was around too much. But I think a group of girls is quite intimidating. If there's someone on there own then I think it's easier to follow them. Nothing nasty ever happened.

What was the weirdest thing the girls received in the post?
Lulu: We had a series of letters written in Greek which were death threats. I think that was somebody who was studying Greek at university and was bored. Nobody sent us anything really nasty.

Were there more complimentary ones?

Lulu: Yes. We used to get a lot of letters from girls asking if they could borrow the costumes.

Was there ever talk of a costume auction?

Lulu: No, because they all belonged to the BBC. If we wore big, floaty dresses people would want it for their wedding.

Were you ever tempted to steal bits and bobs?
Lulu: No. We could buy bits and bobs if we wanted to. We used to have an hour-long cabaret act which we did outside of the BBC, so we would buy costumes for that. They wouldn't last five minutes though.
