Every other house where I live is empty and boarded up. A few other properties can best be described as houses of broken windows and they are occupied. My house is one of them. During the making of this project alone my windows have been stoned twice. This estate where I live is in Staffordshire and was built in the mid 1950's. What everyone had in common was that they rented their houses from the National Coal Board (NCB) and that they worked down the pit. After the pits closed down and absentee landlords brought a lot of houses things changed. The biggest change occurred when a housing association came on the scene. They offered people the chance to move off the estate and into newly built homes elsewhere. This ripped the heart out of the community and the people who were left, who had lived together side by side for years, found were in the minority. I've had 5 years of abuse and vandalism and I'm not the only one going through this kind of thing. Find out what it's doing to me. |
