Getting hitched

What does marriage mean in 2007?

By Amy Frances
There are some depressing statistics surrounding marriage today. Over 150,000 marriages end every year, and couples married for over 30 years are now twice as likely to divorce as they were ten years ago. So why get married at all?

As an independent 21st century woman, I have often wondered what would motivate me to invest thousands of pounds, endure wearing white for a whole day and probably make a fool of myself in front of my nearest and dearest for the sake of a certificate.

In this day and age, all of the traditional reasons why a woman would need to get married seem somewhat obsolete. As an unattached female you can buy a house, go on holiday, even live with a man and have children without anyone batting an eyelid, so why go through the rigmarole of ‘getting hitched’?

To get some answers, I decided to talk to the wisest woman in the world, my Gran, who survived marriage for over 60 years. I also went to the people who know the most about the downsides (and could there possibly be benefits?)  to marriage, the lovely people at ‘Relate’.

Hear what happened when I tried to get to the bottom of what marriage really means in 2007.
