John Caudwell

Taking the Plunge

By Richard Swancott
Starting up on your own can be a daunting prospect, but it can also be a thrilling adventure and many businessmen and women wonder why they didn’t do it sooner!

People start their own businesses for different reasons. Some want to be the next John Caudwell, and be rich enough to buy a small country! Others just love the idea of being their own boss, and having the freedom to work as much, or as little, as they like.

Many of us would love to work for ourselves, and more and more people in Staffordshire are doing it – 2,000 people have taken the plunge in Stoke-on-Trent alone in the past couple of years.

And it doesn't matter what your age or background is – help is available from various sources, ranging from low-cost premises designed for new companies, to expert support and advice, or even a financial leg-up to get you going.

It won't all be plain sailing though – lots of small businesses disappear within two or three years of starting up – but the rewards are there for anyone who’s prepared to put in the hours.
