Mark Philippoussis steadied his nerves to beat Fabrice Santoro and reach the last 32 of the Australian Open.
The Australian delighted the home crowd with a hard-fought 6-3 3-6 6-4 6-2 win over the Frenchman.
After a tentative start Philippoussis imposed himself on the match with his trademark power both on serve and off the ground.
He goes on to play Croatia's Mario Ancic, who earlier beat Alex Corretja.
"(Santoro) is an extremely difficult opponent, he's so unorthodox, you don't know what he is going to do," said Philippoussis.
"He hits with two hands off both sides and you don't know if he's going to top spin, or hit a drop shot on an angle, so it's important to go out there and concentrate on your game and not worry about that.
"I was extremely pleased with the way I played. I came out a little flat and he took advantage of that.
