Sixth seed Vera Zvonareva crashed out of the Porsche Grand Prix 6-3 7-5 to fellow Russian Elena Likhovtseva.
The world number 11 was a break up and in control of the first set, but her serve - responsible for 13 double faults in total - broke down.
Likhovtseva dominated the second set to forge 5-2 ahead, but showed some nerves before holding out for victory.
"I played well for both sets until I went three games up and then I let her in the game," said Likhovtseva.
