McEnroe plays down LTA link
John McEnroe and Andre Agassi at the Australian Open
McEnroe is currently doing media work in Australia
John McEnroe says he finds it "hard to imagine" taking over as LTA performance director in the next two years.

Frenchman Patrice Hagelauer announced in December he would be leaving to take charge of France's Davis Cup team.

And former Wimbledon champion McEnroe is the highest profile candidate to be linked with the biggest job in British tennis.

It would be interesting to be part of something, perhaps starting at less than a full-time position

But the American has revealed that family commitments mean he would not be able to take up a full-time role in England at the moment.

"I'd love to help kids wherever they are," McEnroe told Grandstand.

"The age group that we're talking about, which is 15 to 18, is exactly the type of group I'm looking for.

"Whether that can mean a full-time commitment at this time from me is hard to imagine.

"I've had talks with my wife who has wanted to move over to England for some time and spend a year or two there, which would open the door for that possibility.

"But my timetable is a little further back.

"I've got some kids who are getting ready to go to college - that would give me the chance (to move) three or four years down the line."

McEnroe does not rule out taking up a less demanding position and is keen to talk to the LTA.

"It would be interesting to be part of something, perhaps starting at less than a full-time position and maybe working my way up," he said.

"I'd like to talk to them about it.

"I still have things I'd like to do myself and other avenues to pursue but at the same time tennis has given me a lot.

"I want to inspire kids to play this great sport and I think I could do that, particularly that age group."
