Top seed loses in first round
![]() Voltchkov was a shock first round loser
Top-seeded Vladimir Voltchkov was among four seeded players to lose in
the opening round of the grass-court Miller Lite Hall of
Fame Championships.
Voltchkov, from Belarus, was beaten 4-6 6-1 6-2 by James Blake of the United States at the tournament in Newport, Rhode Island. Wild card Mardy Fish of the United States upset eighth-seeded Andrei Stoliarov of Russia 6-4 5-7 7-5. Last year in the tournament, Fish won in the first round as a qualifier, defeating Chris Woodruff. Fourth-seed Anthony Dupuis of France lost to Neville Godwin of Britain 7-6 7-5. Britain's Martin Lee disposed of fifth-seed Lars Bergsmuller of Germany 6-3 6-2.
