Merry out of Games
Great Britain's Katherine Merry
Merry has suffered four injuries to the same foot
Katherine Merry has withdrawn from this summer's Commonwealth Games due to injury.

The Olympic 400m bronze medallist needs an operation to remove a bone at the top of her right heel that is putting pressure on her Achilles tendon.

The injury will also keep the Cardiff-based athlete out of the European Championships, due to take place in Munich in August.

The thought of having to miss the whole season to fix a troublesome foot is not the way I wanted to spend the summer
Katherine Merry

"This year has not even started for me and I can confirm that I'm out for the season," Merry told the Telegraph on Thursday.

"That means no Commonwealth Games in Manchester and no European Championships in Munich.

"Whatever the reason for my bad luck, I'm not happy.

"Running is my life and the thought of having to miss the whole season to fix a troublesome foot is not the way I wanted to spend the summer."

Olympic gold medallist Cath Freeman will also miss the Games

The injury is the fourth problem she has encountered with the same foot since missing the World Championships in Edmonton last July.

Merry would certainly have been one of the favourites for the Commonwealth and European titles despite missing last year's World Championships.

Although she only raced four times last summer, she ran a personal best time of 49.59 seconds in Athens last June - the fastest time in the world for 2001.

It is another major blow for the Games organisers following Olympic 400m champion Cathy Freeman's withdrawal last week.

Freeman will remain in Australia during the summer because her husband, Sandy Bodecker, is suffering from cancer.
