Wales and Llanelli Scarlets flanker Dafydd Jones' shoulder injury will keep him out for six-to-nine months.
The blind-side, 26, was ruled out of Wales' tour to Argentina this week when the problem flared up, Jamie Ringer taking his squad place for the trip.
"It looks pretty serious for Daf, he will have an operation next week and return in the new year," said Scarlets chief executive Stuart Gallacher.
Jones, who has 29 caps, has missed most of the last 18 months with injuries.
