The England World Cup hero came on for the second half against Edinburgh and kicked five points in a 13-10 victory.

"Winning the English Cup with Newcastle was right up there with winning the World Cup for England," he said.

"The European Cup is the biggest thing you can do with a club - and it is the biggest goal I have left in rugby."

Wilkinson was relieved to emerge intact from his first outing in two months at Murrayfield, after shaking off a bicep injury.

It was only his eighth match of the year after previously missing eight months with a shoulder problem.

"I was more prepared to come back than I was the last time," he added.

"That was the first pass I have taken and the first ball I have kicked for eight weeks and I am satisfied how things went."

Falcons director of rugby Rob Andrew brought Wilkinson on at half-time after Dave Walder took a knock to the head.

And Andrew took satisfaction from Wilkinson's contribution to the victory, Newcastle's fourth pool win in a row.

"I am very pleased for him and the team," Andrew said. "Jonny came through unscathed and overall he had a good game.

"He kept us calm in the second half and his presence allowed the team to find a win.
