Harlequins 18 Newcastle 20

England international Jonny Wilkinson landed a penalty two minutes into stoppage time to give Newcastle victory.

Harlequins had trailed 17-8 in the second half before edging into a one-point lead.

But, just as they were about to celebrate a successful comeback, then Wilkinson sent them spinning to defeat.

Wilkinson broke the deadlock with a 42-yard penalty after only three minutes, then converted Mike Stephenson's try to make it 10-0 to the visitors.

Quins hit back with a penalty of their own from Irish international fly-half Paul Burke just before the interval before reducing the deficit still further when Steve White-Cooper forced his way over.

But their momentum was halted when Hall Charlton sprinted 60 yards up the field before off-loading to full-back Mike Stephenson, who touched down under the posts.

Newcastle opened up a useful nine-point lead when Wilkinson kicked the conversion.

Quins were not finished, cutting the deficit to six with a penalty from Burke. Then, four minutes from the end, Ryan O'Neil went over.

When Burke added the conversion, it seemed that the London outfit would clinch a much-needed win.

But, with time running out, Wilkinson turned the game on its head yet again.
