Scotland missed out on a place in the semi-finals at the IRB Sevens World Series tournament in George after a last-minute loss to hosts South Africa.
Vuyo Zangqa crossed for a try in the last play of the match for a 21-17 win.
Tries from Ruaridh Jackson (2) and Richie Vernon, Colin Gregor converting one, had put Scotland on the brink of a major upset.
"It was an outstanding performance," said coach Stephen Gemmell. "We took the game to the South Africans."
Scotland now go on to a Plate semi-final against Kenya.
The tournament began with a 38-7 defeat to Samoa but the Scots rallied with a 21-10 win over Australia and a 21-14 success against Tunisia.
